White Council Public Forum / GSF Auction June '17
June 02, 2017, 11:22:07 AM
The next GSF auction will be taking place on Saturday 10th June at the regular time of 3pm Eastern.

Please scroll down to post two to see the full list of items in the sale.

Venue & auctioneer

The auction will take place at Gilfane Arena and I will be acting as auctioneer. The arena is located a little east of the Skara ferry in the central Gilfane area (see map). You can also get there via teleporters: the “Gilfane” teleporter at the Hub east of Umbra will bring you to the Citadel next door, and one directly to the Arena will be available from both the entrance of Vernia Market in New Magincia (the vendor house next to the flower garden) and the IPKU New Magincia hub.

The auction will be taking place on the top floor; follow the stairs up to the second floor then use one of the teleporters south of the fountain.

Auction staff will be wearing the Gilfane crimson and black colours.

Commission

As this GSF auction is not in support of any particular cause, the auction house is not deducting any commission on sales.

Auction house rules

All those attending the sale are asked to be considerate to other participants and not do anything to disrupt or unnecessarily delay proceedings, especially pointless spamming of text and/or spells. Those engaging in aggressive, disorderly and/or suspicious behaviour are liable to be removed from the building by officials. In addition, the following prohibitions are in effect:

a) No hiding or stealthing within the arena building, unless authorized to do so or in self-defence.

b) No casting of spells in the arena building unless in self-defence or authorized to do so. Exceptions are minor beneficial spells such as night sight, provided these are not spammed. The opening of gates is specifically banned; please go outside to do this.

c) No pets are permitted in the building.

d) No sitting in the priority seating (the thrones) without authorization.

e) No entering the secure area (grassy part of the arena) without authorization (such as when purchasing winning bids).

Bidding

Bids can be made at the live event by calling out the amount that you wish to bid. In the case of two identical bids, the one accepted will be the first that appears in the auctioneer's journal.

The auctioneer will try and keep bidding at set levels in relation to the current bid price, but this is not set in stone. However, bids of odd amounts or only marginally above the current high bid may either be rejected or rounded down. The general bid levels are as follows:

up to 100k: increments of 10k
up to 200k: increments of 20k
200k - 500k: increments of 50k
500k - 1 million: increments of 100k
1 - 2 million: increments of 200k
2 - 5 million: increments of 500k
5 - 20 million: increments of 1 million
20 - 50 million: increments of 2 million
over 50 million: increments of 5 million

Winning bidders

Although encouraged to stay until the end of the auction, winning bidders may claim their items at any time by approaching an assistant cashier (NOT the auctioneer, please). You should then follow their instructions to get to the secure checkout area. Sales will be made via a vendor.

If you have to leave the auction unexpectedly and do not have time to claim your items, please at least inform an official. Failure to claim items or give notice may lead to them being offered to the underbidder instead.

Reserve Price

Many items in the sale will carry a reserve price. If bids do not meet or exceed this reserve price, the lot will go unsold. Even if no reserve has been specified, the auctioneer may, at his discretion, decline to sell a lot if he does not believe that a reasonable bid has been offered.

Commission bids

We encourage as many people as possible to try and attend the auction but if you are unable to do so, and do not have anyone who can act on your behalf, then it is possible to send in a bid in advance of the sale, known as a commission bid. The commission bid represents the maximum amount your are prepared to pay for the item, and the auctioneer will bid on your behalf up to this amount.

The following rules apply to commission bids:

a) To make a commission bid, PM/ICQ me with “Commission bid” as the title. Include the lot number and description of the item(s) you wish to bid on, together with the maximum amount you are prepared to pay.

b) If I do not know you, then please tell me who you are in-game. Commission bids may be limited or even rejected from complete strangers without some sort of security.

c) In the event of identical commission bids, the one received first will take priority.

d) Commission bids are held in strict confidence and will not be revealed to anyone other than the auctioneer. However, the identity of any winning bidders may be entered into the public record.

e) Successful bidders will be notified of any items that they win. Please try and make arrangements to collect the items within forty-eight hours of the end of the sale. Failure to make adequate communications with the auctioneer may result in the items being withdrawn and offered instead to the underbidder.

Official accounts & settlement

A record of sale prices will appear here after the auction.

Settlement with those who have sold lots will be made as soon as practicable.

Confidentiality & liability

All reserve prices, commission bids and other privileged information from buyers & sellers will be kept in confidence by the auctioneer except in the event of a new auctioneer having to be appointed due to illness or force majeure.

Final responsibility for items being sold, monies raised thereon and the conduct of the auction, lies with the auctioneer.

Submitting items for sale

If you have item(s) that you want to put into a future auction, please get in touch with me or drop them in the usual places if you are a regular.

The next auction is scheduled for June 10th. If you would like to put anything in then please contact me or drop stuff in the usual places.

With the arrival of the new animal training system I have been asked about the possibility of selling pets at the auctions. I was rather reluctant at first because of all the extra work that would be involved, the large screenshots that may be required and the fact that I do not want to handle the beasts myself. So after consideration, the following procedure would need to be followed for anyone wishing to sell a pet:

a) Contact me as you would for any other lot to get authorization to sell the animal(s) together with your desired reserve. Please include a brief description of the pet, e.g. untrained 1000hp frost dragon, that would be used in the auction listing.

b) If authorized for the auction, the owned must then provide publicly accessible information/screenshots/etc about the pet. This can be done on this forum, Stratics, or anywhere else they choose. Any forum post should be in the format of "pet description for month auction", e.g. Untrained 1000hp frost dragon for June auction. If selling more than one pet, you can make individual posts or an amalgamated one as you see fit. If combining multiple pets in a single post, entitle it "Pets for sale in month auction". If the information is posted anywhere other than these forums, please provide me with the relevant URL(s). In the auction listing, your pet description will be linked to the thread/location you created.

c) All pets will remain in the possession of the vendor and at the conclusion of the auction it will be up to the buyer and seller to complete the exchange of gold/animal themselves. Notify me if there are any disputes or if one party is unable to contact the other.

White Council Public Forum / Elon Musk interview
May 02, 2017, 10:09:05 AM
For anyone interested, here is the latest interview with Elon Musk in which he mentions some of the things he is working on. If you don't know who is, he is the guy behind Tesla (electric and automated cars) and SpaceX (cheap space flight), and he's a bit like one of these bond villains from the 70s (but hopefully without the evil intentions). He is certainly ambitious and I have a hard time believing some of his time scales, but he is certainly a visionary and he has a track record of delivering what he promises. Makes our current crop of politicians seem ***** useless.

A NOOB is only eligible for this from one auction during their term and may not use alts to increase their share. If no qualifying NOOB members are present the proceeds will instead be donated to the GM. If anyone wishes to donate a future lot for this purpose, possibly to advertise your guild or establishment, please advise me when you submit the item.

The next GSF auction will be taking place on Saturday 8th April at the regular time of 3pm Eastern. It's another excellent month for overall quality and once again we are going with 55 lots to help meet the demand. There are ten "featured items" this month because I just couldn't decide which of them to choose, but of those I think the star lot may well be a the chance to get your hands on "The Wanderer" music gear whether to add to your music box or just to display as a rare.

Please scroll down to post two to see the full list of items in the sale.

The next GSF auction willl be taking place on Saturday 4th March at the regular time of 3pm Eastern. This is one of the best auctions ever in terms of item quality, headed by our two star lots: a prime New Magincia house and one of the animated Primeval Lich sparkles, surely the greatest deco drop currently available which only spawns approximately once every one-hundred-and-fifty runs through the champ. Please also see reply #2 for more auction news.

The auction on March 4th affords this rare opportunity to acquire a superb plot in Siege's most exclusive commercial and residential district. New Magincia plot number SW4 is one of the prime spots ion the island with handy access to the moongate and ship docking space on the shoreline for non-magery gating to your house.

These do not become available often, so don't miss out! If you are unable to attend, remember that as with all lots you can send in a confidential commission bid and the auctioneer will bid on your behalf to a maximum of the specified amount.

Terms of sale:

At the end of the auction, the winning bidder (unless they are able to purchase straight away) will be required to make an immediate down payment of 10m to the auction house. They will then be given up to a week to obtain the balance and complete the sale with the vendor. Failure to finalize the trade on time will result in forfeiture of the deposit, and the underbidder will then be invited to obtain the property by paying the balance owed. The down payment will be passed on to the vendor upon completion, or returned to the buyer if for any reason the sale does not go ahead through no fault of their own.

* Lot #25 designation is provisional and could be changed in the final auction listing.

up to 200k: increments of 20k

So it seems that Mesanna is going to be appointing a dedicated Siege EM once again to replace Bennu. But we don't know when that will be, how competent they will turn out and how long they will last. Furthermore, any new EM will presumably just return to the regular King's Council meeting format of the governors and Blackthorn. And for the time being the shard would have to carry on without any King's Council meeting. But one alternative is for Siege players to take over the running of a King's Council themselves. That way we could mould the Council into exactly what we want and providing we had a core group of people who would ensure that the meetings take place and are run properly, we would be independent of any EM and not have to rely on them. If we do have an EM then he can attend the meetings on Blackthorn and do pretty much what he did before.

A King's Council run by the players would allow us to expand it to other Siege communities such as representatives of player towns, non-Fel towns such as Ter Mur, Zento & Luna, and groups like the Savages. And as most Siege RPers seem to take a dim view of British/Blackthorn and their authority, there would also be the possibility of the Council electing its own King/Queen(s) of Siege (or whatever we wanted to call it). Such a king would of course have no real authority over anyone, but it would bring up intriguing roleplay possibilities with the king possibly issuing edicts which may be followed or laughed at by others. The Council could also raise funds to purchase two name change tokens per term, one so that the incoming king could change his name and the other for the outgoing one to change his back to normal. And finally, the Council could be used for non-RP things such as discussing problems on Siege with regard to new publishes, etc.

On the flip side to all this though is the worry that it may not work. Firstly there are only so many people that are interested in KC meetings regardless of who is running them. They are essentially just RP events and there is little of that left on Siege or UO these days. It can be difficult enough to find candidates for the regular governorships (nobody entered for Jhelom this term), so where will the elected representatives of Zento, Umbra, etc come from? There are a lot of new faces on Siege at the moment, but how many are the sort that will attend the KC? Not many appear to be ones that would. Just look at how many newcomers attend the monthly auctions - it is essentially just the veterans who show up even though you can buy some good stuff at fairly low prices. And then we are assuming that all people who are interested in this are going to reach agreement on everything and we are not going to have major differences of opinions on how things should operate. So a lot of work may be put into this for nothing. Do we want to bother?

So what are people's thoughts on this? And who would support such an enterprise by Siege players?

Yesterday, Kelmo called a meeting of Siege governors and residents to discuss a way forward for the shard now that we no longer have a dedicated EM and no official King's Council meetings. A summary of what came out of this meeting is:

a) Various ideas were talked about including a organizing our own King's Council meetings.

b) Future King's Councils should include player communities (such as Gilfane and Safe Haven) and other non-Britannian communities such as Zento, Luna, Umbra, etc, and possibly other groups such as the Savages, etc.

c) The possibility of Siege electing its own king was mentioned, possibly by a vote of the expanded King's Council. No great details were discussed regarding this, however.

d) It was mentioned that past attempts at trying to improve Siege had always met with failure because there are always small groups and individuals with their own agendas and jealousies who try and throw a spanner in the works (for example, "the NEW books").

e) In the end it was decided that the best initial step would be to contact Mesanna and find out exactly what her intentions are with regard to Siege's EM and events. Once that is established we can then better plot the way ahead.

White Council Public Forum / Artisan Festival strategy
December 04, 2016, 11:29:03 PM
So it seems that getting the tree to the max on Siege is going to be tough. I am pretty sure it can be done, but not in every city as we just don't have the BODers here. So I think the best strategy for the next town is to get as many characters as possible to turn in a single junk BOD. It doesn't matter what it is, just as long as they turn one in and create an entry. As a reward goes to a certain percentage of participants based on the level of the tree, the more participants we can get the more rewards will be dished out.

Then, those people that really want a reward can turn in more BODs, probably at least around 400 points (a large BOD say). Whilst nobody is assured of a reward, if there are lots of characters who have just turned in a single BOD, most people who turn in a few hundred points should end up with one. I think it is probably fairly pointless to turn in vast number of BODs on one character, better to spread them around 2-3.

So let's see how that strategy works. Get everyone you can to come and turn a BOD in. Give them a junk one so they can do it. Also, let's try and get the tree to level 2 and then leave it there. The points required to get to the next level increase each time and we were even not able to get to level three last time. So let's conserve the BODs for now and save them up for a bug push later on and instead only use a modest amount using this strategy and see how it works.

Any suggestions/modifications, please post here...

White Council Public Forum / Story Night Special
November 30, 2016, 02:31:11 PM
To mark the start of the seasonal period we are holding a special edition of that old Siege institution Story Night on Saturday 3rd December at 9pm Eastern, where people take turns to step up and recount some yarn, poem or song. So come along, grab a drink or ten, then listen to a tale of derring-do, misadventure or drunken debauchery (okay, maybe not so much of that) mixed with the odd soothing bardic melody (any use of the Autotune spell is expressly prohibited). If you wish to contribute something then we would love to hear it, otherwise we can just listen to something from the vast library of Siege's most renown bard, Blind Otto, who has received special dispensation to leave his cryogenic sleeping capsule in order to attend the event.

With The Golden Unicorn sadly having crumbled a couple of years back, the venue will be The Tortured Elf in Gilfane, the building north of the auction Arena. A teleport tile will go directly from the tavern to the entrance of Vernia Market in New Mag.

See you there...
